Rainbow at the Farm

Tuesday night turned out to be a rainy night at the farm. We spent the night indoors working on the greenhouse and organizing items in the shed.

When the rain finally stopped, I took a moment to walk outside and saw the  brilliant sun starting to peek through the dark clouds. The bright rays of the sun lit up the whole farm for a few minutes and was just gorgeous! We then saw a beautiful rainbow touch down in the distance. Love the beauty we saw tonight.

Saving the Tomato Transplants

Sister Wilde was busy in the greenhouse today saving the tomatoes. Apparently a few of them didn't do so well so she came to the rescue and is transplanting them again for a second round.

Here are the leftover tomato plants that were the weakest in the group. We only take the cream of the crop for planting. We're going to see if we can revive the ones that weren't doing so well by putting them in their own pots to grow.

Sister Garvoille was busy sifting soil to help the tomato plants.

Giving the Transplants a Blue Bath

The lettuce seedlings planted a few weeks ago started to sprout. Tonight's task was to fertilize the seed trays in a special blue potion known as 10-52-10 that helps promote root growth.

Here are all the lettuce varieties we planted along with some cabbage and Brussel sprouts.

One of our service missionary's granddaughter came to help out at the farm tonight. Together they helped fertilize all these veggies.

To make our special blue potion, we took one cup of this 10-52-10 fertilizer and placed it in another bucket.

The bucket was then filled with water.

And the fertilizer water was dumped into a shallow tray.

Elder Haynes provided instruction on how to properly fertilize the plants.

The trays were soaked for about a minute in the fertilizer.

And then they were set back out to dry.

Three (not so) Blind Mice

Our greenhouse was raided by three persistent and hungry mice. They devoured the transplants so our diligent sister missionaries  replanted the bell peppers, hot peppers, and tomatoes.

A paintbrush was used to level out the dirt on the trays.

Another task that was completed today occurred in the new tool shed. We had many volunteers from the Sandy and Draper Young Single Adult Wards come and organize the tools in the shed. We are grateful for their help!

Greenhouse Seeding

Tonight was a cold night at the farm. Most of the sisters worked in the greenhouse planting seeds, while the men and a few other tough sisters worked outside pruning the grapevines. We had two new sister missionaries join the team--they are both named Sister Leitner. They really are sisters and live together in West Jordan. We're happy to have them on board.

Here they are working in the greenhouse planting celery and tomato seeds.

Here's Sister Leitner working on planting her seeds. The seed packet contained over 500 seeds and barely covered the very bottom of the packet. It looked like it was almost empty.

These teeny, tiny celery seeds were placed inside a plastic cup. A seed spoon was then used to carefully pull one seed out at a time.

One samba celery seed was placed in each hole of the celery crate. You had to really keep track of where you were in the process because the seed was so tiny that you couldn't see it next to the soil mixture.

Greenhouse is almost full

The greenhouse is filling up fast
And after the last frost it will empty even faster
